The Fleece

The first couple of ounces I processed had a loooooooot of second cuts and I worried I'd been had, but it's actually a beautiful fleece.

This is my first time processing such a large fleece, first time handspinning a sweater, first time steeking, and first time dyeing yarn on purpose.

  • Purchased: June 2024
  • Weight: 6 pounds
  • Cost: $118
  • Farm:
  • Avg staple length:
  • Color: bi-colored (mostly black with some white)

Processing the fleece feels like it's taking the absolute longest, longer even than the drop spinning. I'm separating the colors the best I can, picking it by hand with a flicker card, and then just scouring it in a little plastic bin in my kitchen sink. The soap I'm using to scour is safe for plants, and lanolin is high in nitrogen, so I'm pouring the first wash down the garden.
